This listing covers combined loss of both sharpness of vision (acuity) and side vision (visual field) in your better eye.

Read the full plain-language explanation

SSA uses formulas that mix your acuity and field test results into a single score. You only need to meet one of the two options (A or B). This listing does not count as legal (statutory) blindness.

What Listing 2.04 asks for

What SSA looks for — see the 2 items

We will check your records against each of these. Every item comes straight from SSA's own listing.

    • SSA multiplies your visual acuity efficiency percentage by your visual field efficiency percentage and divides by 100.
    • If the result is 20 or less for your better eye, you meet this option.
    • For example, 75% acuity efficiency times 36% field efficiency equals 27% (which would not meet).
    • You only need A or B, not both.

    (Listing 2.04, criterion A)

    • SSA adds your visual acuity impairment value (from a table, e.g., 20/60 = 0.48) to your visual field impairment value (the MD from a static field test divided by 22).
    • If the total for your better eye is 1.00 or more, you meet this option.
    • You only need A or B, not both.

How long it must last:

The impairment must have lasted or be expected to last at least 12 months. Meeting 2.04 is not statutory blindness, so the standard duration requirement applies.
